Sophie Nguyen Week #16: Crepes
If you google "Yo-Bowl Southland Mall" and look at the photos of the location, the first image you will see is a picture of me wearing a bright blue tee-shirt, standing in front of the counter. If you continue to scroll down the photos, you will find that there are a lot of pictures of me. Sometimes next to my brother, or by myself. Years of my life have been captured and are presented on this Google location photo page. Before, there were pictures that show my brother and I's faces, but my mom made my dad take them down.
The reason there are so many pictures of me in front of this crepe place during various stages of my life is because I go there for all of my birthdays. I used to go to Sweet Tomato as well, before it shut down. It may be nostalgia bias, or something else, but Yo-Bowl makes my favorite crepes. Each year, my dad asks me what I want to do for my birthday, and each year I ask to go to the crepe place in Southland Mall.
Since the prompt for this blogging quarter is memory, I wanted to write about this place, because it is one of the most consistent things in my life. For every birthday, each time I go to the optometrist, and if I just happen to visit the mall to buy some clothes. This lace holds a lot of sentiment for me, and as the restaurants surrounding the crepe place close due to Covid, I hope it stays for years to come.
Hey Sophie!
ReplyDeleteI just searched it up and thats so cool. I would so hyped if I was in the first picture of my favorite place. I really like how you tied a particular place as simple as a crepe shop into the theme of memory, as I don't think anyone has talked about something like this yet. This was really cute, thank you for sharing:) Also I used to go to Sweet Tomatoes for all my birthdays until it closed too!
I don't really have a restaurant or any places that bring back specific memories, but I do have foods that bring back good times. Every year, during the late summer peas would be in season, and my mom would make chow mien. It has been a while since we had it, but I still remember the joy that my brother and I feel whenever we smell it cooking on the stove. Right now, my mom is in the hospital. I haven't seen her in over a week much less smelled her cooking. I used to really like the style in which she made our dinners. It was simple and borderline flavorless at times, but mom made it with love and time that she couldn't spend for herself.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophie,
ReplyDeleteLike you, my family also has a certain restaurant for celebrations. Every time we'd like to cherish a moment, we order chicken tikka pizza from Bombay Pizza House. Now, every time we eat there, I'm flooded with memories of good times. Having a specific place for moments of happiness, in my opinion, serves an emotional anchor, and when I feel down, I also go there to cheer myself up.
Sincerely,
Krish
Hi Sophie,
ReplyDeleteThat's really nice that this spot serves as something like a comfort spot. It will be cool for you to take your friends and family members in the future to show them a big part of your life. On another note, I have never had a crepe and would really to try one. Next time I'm around the area, I might just give this place a shot!
Hi Sophie,
ReplyDeleteI think crepes are an absolute banger. Most people think of sweet crepes, but in my opinion, savory ones are where they're at. They come in basic and premium variants, letting me choose from a variety of price ranges (cause I'm broke as hell). Crepes are good, but the memories that you talked about are much better. Cheers.
Sincerely,
Sean Wang
Hey Sophie, food is so incredibly nostalgic. I remember for years I used to go to Red Lobster for my birthday every year, until my parents got sick of it and switched to Cheesecake Factory. I think it's really awesome how all your memories at Yo-Bowl are captured in the photos of you and your brother online. They may just be random pictures to some, but they will always have meaning for you. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Sophie,
ReplyDeleteYo-Bowl sounds like a great place! I do not have a favorite place that I go to every year, but if I had to choose one, I would name the Pho 99 restaurant close by my house (although it sometimes switches names to Pho Saigon 2). The restaurant has had amazing pho for as long as I have been living here, and I always love it when I get to go there. I still go there sometimes for special occasions, but always for takeout due to COVID.
Sincerely,
Raymond Yu
Hi Sophie,
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to try what I call "true" crepes: crepes made in France. As I learned in French, crepes originate from France, aka the real taste of crepes should be in France. I remember the few hours I was at Paris during a connected flight from India, and there I was looking all around the airport for a restaurant that made crepes. I could not actually find one because checking in took way too long.
Sincerely,
Vivan Waghela
Hi Sophie,
ReplyDeleteWhen you talked about your pictures in front of this place, I cant help but to draw similarities to those videos on youtube of "Taking a picture of myself everyday for 10 years." Those videos to me are always pretty emotional and are very very cool to look at. I think its super cool how you not only have this little tradition within your family, but you also have a time capsule to accompany it and show to others and look at for yourself.
