Quarter 4, Week 14: i forgor πŸ’€

I have wanted to vent about my terrible terrible memory for a very long time. When we were still on the power quarter, I told myself that the first post I would write had to be about my bad memory. Ironically, I forgot. I hope you all enjoy this more anecdotal blog about my memory mishaps (wait that was unplanned and sounds really cool butI also really want to title this “i forgor πŸ’€”).

Forgetting things is fine on a small scale, it can sometimes even be funny. Like Raymond touched on in his last post, I often walk into a doorway, forget what I originally wanted to do, then remember as soon as I walk away. I also cannot remember birthdays at all; I have a max capacity of storing 3 birthdays in my head at once. Both of these are relatively harmless, but it gets really bad when I forget the big stuff. For example, I forgot to turn in my familyID for boys tennis team! And as a result of that, I am unable to play on the team! I also constantly forget to attend things that I signed up to go to. Yes, I have tried to keep a calendar, but guess what? That’s right, I forget to put things in my calendar! It isn’t like any of this is unfixable, I can almost certainly force myself at gunpoint to immediately write down every little thing in my calendar, but when I do, it only takes a little while before I relapse into, once again, forgor πŸ’€. 

I desperately hope that as I get older, my memory will slowly get better, or at the very least I can force myself to genuinely become organized in the long run, not just in short bursts. The good news is that with every big incident that I suffer extreme humiliation or sadness from my forgetfulness, I get just a little better at keeping track of the things I need to do. Hopefully one day, I will finally be able to enter the realm of i rember 😁.

  1. Hi Yi-Kuan,

    My way of dealing with stuff I have to do is this: put it down on your phone as soon as you hear about it. The only thing I check without other people telling me to is my phone; I do it all the time. I don't know if Apple has a widget function with reminders, but I made my home screen so that half of it is covered by a big list of reminders. I know that you use a Notes function, which I do not particularly like because of the reason you mentioned (which was that you forgot to put tasks in there in the first place). In that way, I feel justified for spending so much time on my phone; every time I click the home button, I am reminded of the things I need to do.

  2. Two days ago, I heard a google calendar invitation from my brother's phone, and I was shocked to hear that he logs all of his activities when I don't even do that. Well, the first reason why is because I don't have many things to do that are on a strict timeline. The goals I set for myself are usually an overestimate so my schedule is flexible until the last possible minute.This was more of the case back in ninth grade when I'd allocate entire days to study for tests. However, I do say that procrastination forces you to do better and stop wasting time, but it really only works for people who are good at it. I also had many ideas for this quarter's blog topic, but I have since forgotten. It feels like every week we do comments, I have a topic to write about but that topic is never shared because I forget.

  3. Hi Yi Kuan,

    Maybe you should have a huge whiteboard put up in your room/house with a large list of whatever comes to your mind in that moment, so you can never forget it. Just don't forget to carry around the whiteboard wherever you go, so you also don't forget whatever was written on it. I'm sure you must've tried something like this, but I just wanted to share a suggestion with you. Forgetting is truly a big thing in life that can be very significant sometimes, and insignificant others. I'm sorry that you weren't able to play tennis since you forgor; at least you can look back on your junior year inexistent tennis season and realize where forgetting has taken you, which may cause you to never forget things again.

  4. Hi Yi Kuan,

    Wow, I have never read a more relatable blog post than yours. Just like you, I often "forgor" some very important things. For instance, there was a summer program I was interested in applying to, but I forgot the deadline, so when I finally got around to creating an account, I realized that the application had ended. I've gotten much busier than then, so I've had to create a few systems to get around this. One which really helps me is having post-its all over my desk. It's impossible to ignore them, and it's extremely frictionless to tack one up when I remember I need to do something. I hope this helps!

  5. Hey Yi-Kuan, I can definitely relate. I wouldn't say I'm a super forgetful person, but if I do forget something pretty important, I'm usually extremely upset at myself for a few days, especially if I was supposed to do something for someone else. I have conditioned myself into writing down all my homework and due dates in my agenda, and that helps me out a lot. Hopefully you can find something that will help you to "rember."     I strongly dislike the amount of emojis you put in your post. Anyways, I also forget relatively big things as well. Recently I have been forgetting to turn in a few homework assignments that I actually finished beforehand, but have failed to press the turn in button. Those are only small things though. I also forget when my math quizzes are or APENG assignments (sorry). I also forget other things that are not school related. My chores and people's birthdays. Honestly I have a really bad memory. I am slowly getting better at organization and hope to not forget too many things as time goes by.

    I can't actually believe you forgot to submit your familyID for boys tennis lol. Whatever, I tried out and I didn't get in sadly. For some reason, I remembered out of random that I had to do that submission, and before that, i forgorπŸ’€ (see what I did there). Lastly, I hope my memory does not die on me on May 10, I don't want to fail my 2 physics AP tests.

    I really liked your blog title "I forgor." You can never go wrong with a Kanye reference. I like the "i rember" at the end too. I feel like I am personally in between being forgetful and being on top of things. On one had I'm brilliant at remembering birthdays and jokes and moments. But I will forget what I was meant to do when I got home or about a homework assignment. I find it interesting that you struggle a bit with both. What I have found to really help with that for me is using Google Calendar, Notion, and Reminders. With these various planning and organizing apps, I have found that my ability to remember things has become so much better. I hope these help you and thank you for sharing king

    Thank you for the beautiful meme theme. I had seen it quite a few times on discord but didn't know it was a full-blown meme until I searched it up for your blog. I love learning new things about pop culture (usually). I also have a really bad memory and can emphasize your situation. I have forgotten quite a few important things before, and it is also really hard for me to set up a lasting memory improvement habit. Although I have tried setting up calendars and journals before in the past, the habit of using them was quickly snuffed out by one missed day. I hope that one day I can create a lasting habit to improve my memory. You and I should probably start now, while we still can.
